Question: Should we create separate photo albums for things like location?
IMO, no. Instead, we should use tags instead. Although we could not do this on FB albums, we could do so on MyCirclePines by using tags.
Please feel free to add your comments. Here's the discussion so far.
Discussion:
Fred, it would be interesting, although perhaps too labour intensive, to have an album of ‘front porch photos through the years’ and another for kitchen porch photos.
Actually, instead of creating separate albums for various locations (e.g. front porch, kitchen porch, beach, etc.) it would be better to use tags on MyCirclePines.
If we were to create separate albums for each location, then a given photo might exist in more than one album (e.g. both in the ecamps album and again in the kitchen_porch album).
Currently, I do have separate "base albums", each with its own separate set of photoIds (e.g. ecamps_027, ecamps_028, ... and bevp1_000, bevp1_001, ...).
All of these "base albums" (e.g. ecamps, bevp1, ...) can be easily seen and accessed at MyCirclePines (just click on the Albums tag to see the list).
Here's the link to see the album list: https://mycirclepines.org/albums/
So, there is some redundancy already in that the same photo might appear in more than one base album.
This isn't too bad, but I would rather not add even more redundancy by having even more base albums for things like location. The more redundancy you have, the more you duplicate your efforts to identify the people in the photo. Also, if you leave a comment on a given photo, that comment will not show up on all of the redundant copies of that photo.
Luckily, there is an alternative: tags.
BTW, each of the photos in all of these albums has a PhotoId (e.g. ecamps_027) that matches up with the corresponding album/photo back at CPC's Facebook Group site. And, for each base album, there is a tag name (e.g. ecamps, bevp1, directors) associated with it.
Now, instead of adding new base albums for things like location, we could simply start adding tag names for locations (e.g. kitchen porch) to the photos in existing base albums. Once we've tagged photos for things like "kitchen porch" we could see all of the photos (from all of the albums) that have been tagged with "kitchen porch". However, in this case we would NOT need to create a separate "base album" for each location.
BTW: the tagging mechanism for doing this (e.g. tagging photos by location) has already been set up on MyCirclePines.
Also, if there's a way to do this on FB, I don't know of it. Further, the photos on FB cannot be searched. If you're looking for a specific photo on FB, you just has to plow through all of the albums one photo at a time. Hence the need for something like MyCirclePines.
